Why I'm Bullish on Ethereum: An Enthusiast's Perspective

 In the ever-changing landscape of cryptocurrency, it's easy to focus on price action and short-term trends. As someone who closely follows this space and is learning to code as a hobby, I wanted to share why I remain fundamentally optimistic about Ethereum despite market volatility and competing narratives.


1. Community: Ethereum's Greatest Asset

Just as artist need quality tools to create, developers need a robust toolkit. When choosing a development platform, community strength is perhaps the most crucial criterion:

Community Size Creates Tool Diversity

- Large Community Benefits → The larger the community, the greater the diversity of "hammers" available to me. With many people using these tools, knowledge accumulates and experienced users create specialized developer tools.

- Value of Critical Feedback → The more people complain about Ethereum, the more the open-source project evolves.

- Paradigm VC's Contributions → Paradigm goes beyond mere investment, making substantial contributions to the Ethereum ecosystem. Tools like Reth and Foundry have become essential daily development tools.

- Transparent Direction → It's possible to predict what kinds of applications can be built. While Solana excels at blockchain engineering, its future roadmap lacks clarity. Ethereum tends to lead most trends, with Solana seemingly adopting a strategy of observing Ethereum innovations and then creating improved versions.


In contrast, while Solana may be more profitable, it offers a poorer developer experience, and it's harder to find other developers who have overcome the same challenges. For developers, it's incredibly valuable when someone has already solved a problem and either created a framework or posted answers on Stack Overflow.


2. Staking and Performance: Speed vs. Stability

Solana has seen tremendous validator returns this cycle due to active meme coin trading and sniping. Meme coins succeeded on Solana for several reasons:

Solana's Speed and Its Tradeoffs

- Transaction Speed → With 400ms transaction times, Solana created an ideal environment for meme coin trading, where quick transaction processing is crucial for user experience given how rapidly prices can change.

- MEV Issues → However, even with fast transaction speeds, users remain vulnerable to MEV (Miner Extractable Value). Avoiding MEV requires higher gas fees, which in turn slows down transactions. This seems like a strategic move designed to appeal to retail users who may not understand these mechanics.


Ethereum's Speed Improvement Solutions

Ethereum's slower block times have been a longstanding issue, but several solutions are in progress:

1. Flashblocks Protocol on Base Chain → This aims to reduce block time to 200ms, with potential for further reductions given L2's more centralized nature. Base will soon support much faster transaction processing.

2. Preconfirmation on L1 → If successfully implemented on L1, this could enable faster transaction speeds, though likely with increased gas costs.

3. Based Rollups → These are gaining popularity recently, and when combined with preconfirmations, could increase validator yields.

4. Native Rollups → This approach verifies L2 blocks within the L1 EVM and, if realized, could increase L2 verification fees on L1, boosting validator returns.

5. Institutional Preference for L2 → Institutions tend to favor Ethereum and are likely to develop their own L2 solutions. The proliferation of L2s will contribute to improved validator returns.


3. Technical Development: Long-Term Innovation

Ethereum's technical approach focuses on long-term sustainability:

Cryptographic Leadership

- Ethereum leads research in cryptography, particularly in the ZK (Zero-Knowledge) field, driving fundamental development in the space.

Distributed Systems Architecture

- Blockchain is a special type of distributed system combining decentralization and cryptography. From a computer science perspective, Ethereum's approach appears to be the more correct long-term choice.

Infrastructure Development

- Thanks to its large community, Ethereum benefits from more experimentation and corporate participation in behind-the-scenes infrastructure development.


Conclusion: Ethereum's Future

While Ethereum faces various challenges, it possesses strengths in its powerful community, transparent roadmap, and cryptographic innovation. Solana may have short-term advantages in speed and efficiency, but Ethereum is building a sustainable ecosystem based on long-term vision and solid technical foundations.

As a developer, Ethereum's tools and community provide an invaluable environment for learning and growth. As an investor, Ethereum remains an attractive asset from a long-term perspective.

The blockchain space isn't winner-takes-all; various solutions can coexist. However, Ethereum's position as the center of cryptographic innovation, developer activity, and infrastructure development gives it unique advantages.
